What Is VAPT? A Plain-English Guide for Business Owners

VAPT stands for vulnerability assessment and penetration testing. In plain terms, it is a planned, authorized attempt to find the weak points in your websites, apps, networks and accounts before a real attacker does, followed by a written report that tells your team what to fix first.

VAPT in one paragraph

A vulnerability assessment looks widely for known weaknesses, such as outdated software and unsafe settings. A penetration test then tries to use the important ones, the way an attacker would, to show what could really be reached. VAPT combines both for the same scope. If you want the technical comparison, read our page on VAPT vs penetration testing; this article is for the owner or manager who needs to decide whether to buy one.

What gets tested

You choose the scope, and most companies start with whatever customers touch or attackers can reach:

  • Web applications, such as your customer portal, store or admin panel.
  • Mobile apps on Android and iOS, together with the servers behind them.
  • APIs that apps, partners and websites call.
  • Networks, both the part exposed to the internet and the internal office or data-center network.
  • Active Directory, the system that holds your staff logins.
  • Cloud accounts, wireless networks and other systems when they hold something valuable.

How an engagement runs

  1. Scoping. You tell us what to test and why. We agree the targets, the dates, the test accounts and the rules in writing.
  2. Discovery. We map what exists: pages, endpoints, hosts, roles and technologies.
  3. Scanning and manual testing. Tools cover the known issues quickly. Our engineers then work by hand through the logic of your systems: who can see what, which steps can be skipped, which inputs are trusted.
  4. Proof. A weakness is only reported as serious when we can show what it leads to, within the limits you set so that nothing breaks.
  5. Report. You receive findings with evidence, severity and fix advice, plus a summary written for non-technical readers.
  6. Readout and retest. We walk your team through the results, and after you fix the problems we test again to confirm.

What you receive

A report you can use twice: engineers fix from the detailed findings, and managers, customers and auditors read the summary. Our sample VAPT report shows the layout, and our guide on how to read a VAPT report explains each part.

When a company needs VAPT

  • Before launching a product that holds customer data or takes payments.
  • When an enterprise customer's security questionnaire asks for a recent test.
  • As part of SOC 2, ISO 27001, PCI DSS or DPDP preparation.
  • After a major change in systems, hosting or code.
  • After an incident, or when an investor or insurer asks.

For how often to repeat it, see our testing schedule.

What VAPT is not

  • Not a certificate you buy. It is a test and a report. It does not prove your systems cannot be attacked, only what was found on the days of testing.
  • Not antivirus or monitoring. It checks your defenses, and it does not replace them.
  • Not an automated scan with a logo. A scan alone cannot judge business logic or chain small flaws. Ask any vendor how much is done by a person.

How long it takes, and the cost

A typical engagement runs five to ten working days from kickoff to report, depending on scope. Price follows scope: the number of applications, roles, endpoints and hosts. The VAPT cost guide lists starting prices, and the preparation checklist helps you get ready so the time goes into testing.
